Students will typically be notified that they are being invited to interview in the middle of March, with interviews held during late March or early April. For many of the roles in higher education, neither licensure nor certification is required. We encourage our graduates to pursue licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (see “Licensure” section below for more information). Professional identity is maintained through association with professional organizations such as American Counselor Association, American College Counseling Association, and the American College Personnel Association. We are committed to counseling excellence through scholarship, self-reflection, collaboration and practical experience. We encourage leadership and advocacy in making system-level changes on campuses to promote success for students in today’s schools. As part of this exclusive credential, we continually assess student learning, ensuring that our graduates are prepared for successful careers.
Performance in the internship experience must be satisfactory following the first semester evaluation process, based upon the assessment of the student’s progress by the field site supervisor, the student’s academic advisor, and the Professional Counseling program faculty. Satisfactory performance in the first half of the student’s coursework is a prerequisite for the oral clinical examination for the M.Phil.Ed. The mission of the Counselor Education Program at The Ohio State University is to prepare highly qualified, ethical and culturally competent, professional counselors and counselor educators who exemplify compassion, social justice, and empathy for the human condition. The UAB Counseling program also offers two graduate counseling certificates in Marriage, Couples, and Family Counseling and in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
Our goal is to make the WFU Counseling Programs accessible to working professionals who desire to complete a master’s degree in counseling but cannot leave work for two years to complete the program on campus. More specifics about curriculum, admissions, faculty and other matters are outlined in the following sections. Click here to learn more about the part-time Masters in Counseling online program.
Students must complete their practicum and internship in a clinical mental health setting. Students learn through didactic experiences, small-group projects, and applied learning at community- or school-based sites. Toward the end of the program, students sit for the PRAXIS School Counselor Exam (5422). Students can choose from a variety of testing sites both in and out of Pennsylvania.
Preparation is designed to enable students to deliver counseling services to schools and their extended communities. Students are trained to apply principles of learning, human development, counseling, research, and measurement within the schools in order to serve the educational, personal, social, and career development of culturally different students in schools.

Such services may include, but are not limited to, individual, couple, family, and group counseling with children, adolescents, and adults. Client concerns range from developmental and relational concerns to more severe pathology. All clinical experiences are performed under the direct supervision of an onsite licensed clinician. Professional counselors address the mental, emotional, and behavioral needs of individuals, families, students, and communities.
